George B. Reed Montpelier, Vermont scrapbook, 1805-1903.

A scrapook containing manuscripts, newsclippings, and other printed material relating to the early history of Montpelier, Vermont, assembled by George B. Reed. The material is organized chronologically. The earliest item is an authorization given to Thomas Reed to collect taxes from Montpelier residences, dated April 15, 1805. Much of the early manuscript material, dating from 1805 to the 1820s, relates to George's grandfather, Thomas Reed (1766-1839) who moved from New Hampshire to Montpelier in 1804. It consists of receipts, surveys, militia rolls for 1810 and 1811, a few records of the Montpelier Manufacturing Co., Montpelier Fire Company material, and minutes of the Social Club from 1822 to 1823. Other items include material relating to a celebration of election of Taylor and Fillmore in 1848, a letter relating to the Montpelier village water source, dated 1899, and newsclippings dating from 1887 to 1903 relating to Montpelier, Vermont history.

George B. Reed was born in Montpelier, Vermont on July 28, 1829, the eldest son of Thomas and Mary L. W. (Bowlend) Reed. On July 11, 1861, George B. Reed married Clara B. Burton.
